A Double Celebration

STRATFORD - A double celebration took place Thursday May 29 at the Early Years Centre in Stratford. To mark "May is Better Speech and Hearing Month", Mary Louise LaBerge, Coordinator for smallTALK: Huron Perth Preschool Speech Language Initiative presented Rob Neves, Early Literacy Specialist, with a number of children's books and parents resources to enhance communication skills and literacy. These materials were also provided to celebrate the first anniversary of the Early Years Centre in Stratford. The centre, which also has sites in Mitchell and Listowel, offers playgroups, resources and programs for parents and their children from birth to school age.

"I am delighted to be able to provide children's books and information for parents on how to stimulate and develop speech and language skills", said Ms. LaBerge. "The introduction of the Early Years Centres in Ontario has been a wonderful addition to our communities and provides valuable opportunities for communication development for preschoolers," added LaBerge.

One of the goals of smallTALK is to educate the public about the important role parents and early childhood educators have in promoting speech and language skills through interacting with children. Reading together is an effective and enjoyable way to encourage children's learning to talk and develop an appreciation for books and literacy skills.

smallTALK focuses on prevention, education, early identification and identification of speech and language problems and the Early Years Centres provide a natural location to provide number of these services.

One in ten preschooler has a speech and language problem. Parents should trust their instincts and call smallTALK if they are concerned about the way their child's skills are developing. Early intervention makes a difference! For more information or to refer a child to a Speech Language Pathologist, call 273-2222 or 1-800-269-3683 and ask for smallTALK.
