Big Changes for smallTALK

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Mary Louise LaBerge, Coordinator

Seaforth- A generous donation from the Harmonize For Speech Foundation is enabling the smallTALK: Huron Perth Preschool Speech Language System to enhance its services to parents of preschool children in the Seaforth area.

Marlen Vincent, a member of the Seaforth Community Hospital Foundation and the Seaforth Harmony Kings, approached Mary Cardinal, Site Administrator of the hospital, with an offer of a donation to the hospital. At Mr. Vincent's suggestion, smallTALK applied for and received a grant from the Harmonize For Speech Foundation, the provincial barbershop singers' organization of which the Harmony Kings is a member. Mr. Vincent wanted the local hospital to benefit and given that the motto for the barbershop singers is "We sing so that they can speak", the preschool speech and language services was a logical recipient.

Mary Cardinal, both Site Administrator Seaforth and Program Director Complex Continuing Care and Rehabilitation Services for the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance, welcomes the donation: "These additional resources will enhance existing services and support access for parents seeking support for their children". The hospital has also provided a significantly larger clinic space for the service providers that will allow for parent training and small group therapy sessions.

The donation will allow smallTALK to provide a more full range of services that will include assessment, parent education, and direct therapy. smallTALK has been providing mediated intervention in local child care centres and consultation to Early Years Centre and Rural Response For Healthy Children programs. Mary Louise LaBerge, smallTALK Coordinator, is delighted to be working with the Harmony Kings again. " This is the second time since our inception that we have been the recipients of the Harmony Kings' generosity. Four years ago their donation allowed us to produce the Talk as You Grow growth chart which helps parents ensure their children's communication development is on track". The funds will provide a significant boost in testing and therapy materials for the Speech Language Pathologist and Communicative Disorders Assistant who provide service to the Seaforth area.

smallTALK focuses on prevention, identification and treatment of children who are at risk for or demonstrating a speech and language delay. Funded by the provincial government and administered by the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance, the program provides services across both counties. One in ten preschool children have communication problems. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to trust their instincts and call smallTALK with any concerns regarding their child's speech and language skills development. Effective June 1st, we have a new phone number! Parents can obtain more information or refer a child to a Speech Language Pathologist by calling 272-8216 or toll-free at 1-866-333-7716 and asking for smallTALK.
