Your child’s first words create a very special moment.

They also form the base for your child’s future success at school and in life. From birth, babies begin to communicate with us. Surrounded by words, most young children develop speech and language naturally. Some children, however, take longer to learn communication skills. Left untreated, these children may face life-long problems. Even young children - under two years old - can be helped with speech and language supports. Early intervention reduces the risk of social, educational and emotional challenges that often affect children with speech and language problems.

smallTALK 2020

It has been quite a whirlwind year for the clinicians of smallTALK and the communities that they serve! COVID-19 has brought many changes to our practice…virtual therapy, face masks and eye shields, intensive disinfecting between clients…but one thing remains the same; our commitment to the children of Huron and Perth Counties and their families.

At the beginning of the lockdown from March until July, many of our clinicians were redeployed to the frontlines as screeners and porters of patients and supplies, while still connecting with families and community partners via teleconferences. In June, smallTALK, with the support of the SGH Foundation, was fortunate to be the recipient of a grant that allowed for the purchase of computer equipment, cameras, headsets, teleconference platforms and materials which allowed us to begin to offer video teletherapy to our clients. The learning curve was steep, but the clinicians faced the challenge head-on learned how to support clients from afar. The efforts of the clinicians did not go unnoticed and the program was nominated for an innovation award through the HPHA Awards of Excellence for its move to virtual therapy.

In the fall we received approval from the government to resume in-person therapy on a limited basis which provided options to those who were unable to participate in virtual therapy.

As we move into the year 2021, there are still many unknowns, but please be assured that the clinicians of smallTALK will be available to support the children of Huron and Perth counties either through consultation, virtual therapy or in-person, when possible.
